Racism & racist:-
Being prejudice, discriminative towards somebody directly because of their difference in race or belief that one's own race is superior.
Racism is a negative element that still exists within society and it keeps a divide, when we should all be integrated. It is something which affects an individual or certain groups. By singling them out and making them feel uncomfortable.
It is usually verbal but can be displayed visually. Some people decide to where an offensive t-shirt (e.g. swash sticker) or a band sign with the content of somebody or their beliefs.
Some people use racist language to make themselves look big, when in fact it makes them seem small and insecure. I believe that racism is wrong on all levels and that we as a whole society should pull together and aim for racial-free society.
Sexism:-
Prejudice, discrimination or any form of stereotyping on the basis of gender that affects individuals, commonly women, but not always.
Sexism is something that society has been trying to fight for decades, dating right back to the early 20th century where women were permitted to vote, to the current debate about men’s paternity being only 2 weeks as opposed to 33 weeks maternity leave for the mother.
Sexism is the opposite to the country’s aim of equality . “that we are all equal”. The aim for one gender to be superior over another. Many of the stereotypes are said to be about women, for example “Women have smaller feet in order to fit under the kitchen sink.” Which is an ‘Old fashioned’ statement, it is described this because women rights were defined by society due to the prejudicial thoughts of men.
Many people have different views on gender, but R.A.F. have recently made it official to have equal opportunities in fulfilling any role within the R.A.F.
Homophobia:-
The disliking of prejudice thoughts to somebody that is homosexual, or whom sexual preference differ from the heterosexual orientation, on the basis of their sexuality.
Phobia means fear or dislike. Many people, although not so many nowadays have a fear towards homosexual people.
With the help of media, back in the 80’s homosexual males were perceived to have hiv/aids and this disease got the name ‘gay disease’. Mainly down to the fact that many homosexual males contracted it, even though many heterosexual people did. Nowadays things are different and society is more accepting, not only of homosexuals but if STI’s as well.
In my opinion “love is love” and it is up to the own individual to define what love is to them!
Equality:-
Equality is giving everybody an equal opportunity to succeed in life. Adapting to suit the need of each individual and giving them the support when and where needed.
For example man A were to have a minor cut to his leg and all that he needed was a couple of stitches. Man B had a deep stab wound and needed surgery, stitches and after care.
This resulted in them both being treated fairly and they both got the care that that they needed, but were not given the same because it is to cater for the different needs of the individual, because to treat everybody the same, you wouldn't be able to specialize the care to what the individual needed; this applies to society as we face this everyday whether it be a customer at Boots or a patient in the NHS.
Harassment:-
An aggressive or pressured form of intimidation aimed towards an individual at the individual expense, in order to dominate over the individual.
Harassment can happen anywhere at anytime in a person's life… whether it be at work or at home.
There are many forms of harassment, such as verbal, Physical, Sexual and online (internet). The consciences for the aggressor can lead to restraining orders, criminal record and/or imprisonment. The victim may suffer depression, isolation or violated which will impact on their everyday lives. Harassment can occur in the workplace to messaging online. No good has ever come from harassment and it is not acceptable in any shape or form.
Discrimination:-
The unjustified or prejudicial treatment toward an individual due to their difference in appearance based solely on the grounds of race, age and gender. To discriminate is to act on prejudice thoughts, by assuming that the actions of an individual is indicative of a whole group of people, rather than just that individual. This can be aided by the media who can influence vulnerable young people who have not formed their own opinions on topics which impact their lives. The discriminative views can become extreme in some cases if they are not challenged. At the end of the day discrimination is something that nobody should be a part of.
Prejudice:-
Preconceived opinions of someone not based on any factual or actual experience of the person or group. The assumption that all individuals within a group are the same and act accordingly. Many people have prejudiced or stereotypical thoughts about people. Some people say “it is human nature” to judge people, even when we try hard not to. Others would disagree, and state that “We can choose whether to listen or ignore the prejudice thoughts that we either hear on social media or are influenced by our parents/people whom that we grew up to agree or disagree with them once we have openly listened to other people’s views. I believe that everyone stereotypes, because naturally we do. But the question is whether we decide to be open to letting people change our views and perception on things.
Disability:-
A physical or mental condition that impacts on how somebody conducts their everyday life, whether it be visible or not. In society disability is perceived as a disadvantage or a vulnerability of a person. They are commonly not accepted within society, because they stand out. This is a real shame because we are all people and “no two people are the same” we shouldn't exclude people because they are different. Here in UK we are adapting and forming a better version of ourselves, we are more accepting of people's differences and I believe that this is really important.
Hexerosexism:-
The assumption that heterosexuality is the ‘normal’ sexual orientation and that homosexuality is wrong and that individuals act in a discriminatory or prejudiced way toward homosexual people. This is a big issue within society and many people have different views towards how that society should go about it. Hexerosexism runs along the same lines as homophobia as it is a very opinionated view. Many people have this view and use their religion to justify it. When there are many cases where people have formed these views just as an interpretation rather than what the faith presents them with. Personally I believe that we should all be accepted within society because we are all people and it would be nice to live in a society where everybody accepts each other. That is the aim and one day hopefully it will become a reality to all live in harmony.
